Product Information

The Perth Mint and Australia Post are pleased to present a joint special release celebrating the 100th anniversary of the first banknote in Australia, for the 2013 FIP World Stamp Exhibition.

In 1910 the Australian Notes Act was passed, and in 1913 the first series of Australian notes which were based on the old British system were issued.

The first Australian currency note, the ten shilling denomination was produced in May 1913. Other denominations from £1 to £1,000 followed during the years 1913 – 1915.

Proof Quality 99.9% Pure Silver

The 100th Anniversary of Australia’s First Banknote coin is struck from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality.

Striking Design

The coin’s reverse features a coloured representation of Australia’s first ten shilling banknote. The inscription AUSTRALIA’S FIRST BANKNOTE 100TH ANNIVERSARY and the dates 1913 - 2013 are also portrayed in the design with The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.

Australian Legal Tender

Issued as Australian legal tender, the coin’s obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the year-date and the monetary denomination.

Official Australia Post Stamps

Two Australia Post stamps with denominations of 60c and $2.60 complete this set.  The 60c stamp depicts a portrayal of the official note numbering ceremony in 1913, and the $2.60 stamp depicts the Australian Coat of Arms as it appears on the first banknote.

Beautiful Packaging and Numbered Certificate

Accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity, the coin and stamps are housed in a display case and wonderfully illustrated box-shipper featuring the 2013 FIP World Stamp Exhibition logo.

Limited Mintage

The Perth Mint and Australia Post will release no more than 3,000 of these 100th Anniversary of Australia’s First Banknote 1oz Silver Proof Coin and Stamp Sets.
