The 2008 Centenary of Quarantine recognises 100 years of dedication in managing the risk of pests and diseases entering Australia.  Since the 1908 Quarantine Act, this vital service has helped conserve Australia’s native flora and fauna, and our multi-billion dollar agricultural and tourism industries.

Uncirculated Quality

The commemorative Australian $1 coin is struck from aluminium bronze in uncirculated quality.

Beagle Reverse Design

The coin’s reverse portrays an Australian Quarantine Inspection Service (AQIS) detector dog (the beagle), which is trained to detect food, plants, animals and their products in passengers’ bags.  Australia is represented in a luggage shape with travel stickers identifying the key hazard and protection issues for AQIS.

Australian Legal Tender

Issued by the Royal Australian Mint, the coin depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.

Illustrated Presentation Card

The coin is housed on presentation card illustrated with a coloured image of an AQIS beagle.
