The Royal Australian Mint has issued a commemorative $1 coin to celebrate the centenary of Rugby League in Australia.
100 Years Rugby League
Rugby League broke away from Rugby Union’s strict amateur rules in 1908, allowing the new professional code to compensate working-class footballers for time away from work while playing or injured. Followed passionately by millions, particularly in New South Wales and Queensland, League’s fascinating 100-year history is attributed with contributing to Australia's national identity.
Uncirculated Quality Aluminium Bronze
The 25mm coin, an official Australian Rugby League (ARL) licensed product, is struck from aluminium bronze in uncirculated quality.
Centenary Logo Reverse
The coin’s reverse depicts the Centenary of Rugby League logo, featuring the letter ‘A’ and the year-dates 1908-2008. It appears against a backdrop of lines representing the forward outlook of the sport and the intent to ‘Inspire the Future’ of the game.
Australian Legal Tender
The obverse of the Australian legal tender coin depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Presentation Card
The coin is housed on a presentation card featuring a Centenary of Rugby League DNA sticker denoting its authenticity.
