This delightful square-shaped commemorative marks the
75th anniversary of the relocation of Cooks’ Cottage from Yorkshire, England, to
Melbourne’s Fitzroy Gardens. Completed in 1755 in the village of Great Ayton, the cottage
was built for James and Grace Cook whose famous son, James, charted Australia’s eastern
coastline prior to colonisation in 1788. Cook’s first sighting of Australia was Point Hicks
in what is now south-eastern Victoria. So when the cottage was advertised for sale in 1933,
the purchase was deemed an appropriate way of celebrating Victoria’s centenary. Meticulously
dismantled brick by brick and shipped to Australia for reconstruction, the cottage is
regarded as Australia’s oldest building.
