Dame Nellie Melba was an opera soprano who became one of the most famous divas of her age. She was Australia’s first international singing star and was among the first international artists to perform in radio broadcasts.
A celebration of Dame Nellie Melba, this wonderful release from Australia Post incorporates a $1 commemorative aluminium bronze coin struck by The Perth Mint.
Stunning Reverse Design with Portrait
The coin's reverse depicts a coloured portrait of Dame Nellie Melba and includes the rhododendron flower, her personal emblem. The inscription DAME NELLIE MELBA 1861 – 1931 and The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark are also featured in the design.
Australian Legal Tender
Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the coin’s obverse bears the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2011 year-date, and the monetary denomination.
Australia Post Commemorative Stamp
Affixed to the presentation envelope is a 60c stamp featuring Rupert Bunny’s grand 1902 portrait of Dame Nellie Melba. The stamp is postmarked for the first day of issue.
Beautifully Designed Presentation Envelope
The coin is housed in a beautifully designed card that fits inside a similarly illustrated envelope with a circular window revealing the coin’s reverse and obverse designs.
Seal of Authenticity
The Stamp and Coin Cover also features Australia Post’s Seal of Authenticity and an official number.
