Expert Team of Authors

Medical professionals in the United States, the Dauers have collected US currency since 1973 and banknotes of the British Commonwealth since the 1980s.  Visiting Australia 1982, they were impressed with the artistic design of Australian paper money.  Among the large number of notes portrayed in the book are many from the Dauers’ personal collection.

John Pettit is a leading banknote collector and consultant from Sydney.  A regular attendee at conventions and auctions worldwide, he is active in numerous trade organisations, including the American Numismatic Association and the Australasian Numismatic Dealers’ Association.

The story of Australian banknotes is framed within the history of colonial and post-Federation Australia.  It includes a fascinating guide to people who have been depicted on Australian banknotes – including ‘Banjo’ Paterson, Charles Kingsford Smith, Dame Nellie Melba, and Sir Douglas Mawson.

Commencing with a gallery of pre-Federation notes, the book continues with the first notes issued by the Commonwealth, followed by the pre-decimal issues and the decimal issues.

Along the way, some of the more obscure and intriguing note issues of Australia are presented, such as the Hay Internment Camp issues, the Rabaul military issues, and the notes issued on Fanning Island.
