Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1987 and 1994 and is located 460 kilometres southwest of Alice Springs. The park covers 2,010 square kilometres and includes many Aboriginal sacred sites, including Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) and Uluru (Ayers Rock), one of the world’s largest monoliths.
Archaeological work suggests that Australian Aboriginal people have lived in the area for at least 22,000 years. The Anangu people are the traditional Aboriginal owners of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. They believe that their culture has always existed in the central Australian landscape and was created at the beginning of time by ancestral beings.
Other Australian Heritage Sites included in this series are the Wallandra Lakes Region, Kakadu National Park, Fraser Island and the Lord Howe Island Group.
