The Perth Mint has released this coloured commemorative coin to mark the passing of half a century since the Cocos (Keeling) Islands officially became an Australian territory on 23 November 1955. Proof Quality 99.9% Pure Silver The coin is struck from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality. Coloured Reverse Design The coin's reverse, which incorporates the Mint's 'P' mintmark, depicts a coloured image of a Red-footed Booby bird (Sula sula), which maintains one of the largest breeding colonies in the world on North Keeling Island. Australian Legal Tender Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the coin bears the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on its obverse. Presentation Case Each coin is housed in a teal (greenish-blue) coloured presentation case. Each case comes within an illustrated box-shipper. Certificate of Authenticity Each coin is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity, which highlights the fascinating history of the 27 coral atolls, including the: discovery of the Islands in 1609 by Captain William Keeling; settlement by John Clunies-Ross in 1827; arrival in 1836 of Charles Darwin aboard HMS Beagle; raising of the Union Jack in 1857 by Captain Fremantle; granting of the Islands by Queen Victoria to the Clunies-Ross family in 1886; bombardment and defeat of German raider SMS Emden off North Keeling Island by HMAS Sydney in 1914; 1954 visit by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II; and vote to integrate with Australia in 1984.
