Fauna Theme – Brolga

The reverse of each coin depicts two Brolgas (Grus rubicunda), large grey cranes most commonly seen in Australia’s shallow lakes, swamps, flooded grasslands and salt marshes.  Pairing for life, they are famous for their elaborate dancing, believed to be a courtship ritual.  But their readiness to begin strutting, shaking, leaping and bowing at almost any time suggests they simply love to dance. The year-date and The Perth Mint's traditional ‘P’ mintmark also appear in the design.

Australian Legal Tender

Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the coins depict Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.
