Fauna Theme – King Brown Snake

The reverse of each coin depicts the King Brown Snake (Pseudechis australis), also known as the Mulga Snake because of its common occurrence in mulga woodlands.  A member of the black snake family, it grows to three metres, eating a diet of rival snakes, lizards and mammals.  Capable of injecting venom in much larger quantities than other species, it is regarded as one of the world’s deadliest snakes. The year-date and The Perth Mint's traditional ‘P’ mintmark also appear in the design.

Australian Legal Tender

Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the coins depict Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.
