Fauna Theme – Dolphin

The reverse of each coin depicts two Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), highly social animals inhabiting bays and estuaries all around Australia.  Their ever-smiling appearance suggests a fun-loving nature that is seemingly confirmed by frequent tail slapping, wake-riding and general playfulness.  Extremely smart, they are believed to be able to communicate with each other using high frequency whistles, clicks and squeaks. The year-date and The Perth Mint's traditional ‘P’ mintmark also appear in the design.

Australian Legal Tender

Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the coins depict Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.
