Forty years ago, on the 14th February 1966, Australia introduced decimal notes and coins, marking the end of its British-style currency system based on pounds, shillings and pence. To celebrate the anniversary of decimalisation in Australia, The Perth Mint is delighted to announce this Figures of Note Five-Coin Set featuring designs inspired by the historic figures represented on Australia's original decimal currency notes. Proof Quality 99.9% Pure Silver Each 2006-dated coin is struck from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality. Coloured Reverse Designs The coloured reverse of each coin depicts historic figures as they were depicted on decimal currency notes issued between 1966 and 1974. They are:Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Australia's Sovereign, who appeared on the front of the first $1 note. John Macarthur, 1767–1834, wool industry pioneer, who appeared on the front of the first $2 note; and William James Farrer, 1845–1906, developer of disease and drought resistant wheat, who appeared on the back of the first $2 note. Sir Joseph Banks, 1743–1820, famous English botanist, who appeared on the front of the first $5 note; and Caroline Chisholm, 1808–1877, 'the emigrant's friend', who appeared on the back of the first $5 note. Francis Greenway, 1777–1837, convict architect, who appeared on the front of the first $10 note; and Henry Lawson, 1867–1922, one of Australia's best known writers, who appeared on the back of the first $10 note. Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, 1897–1935, record-breaking aviator, who appeared on the front of the first $20 note; and Lawrence Hargrave, 1850–1915, astronomer and aeronautical pioneer, who appeared on the back of the first $20 note. Historic 'P' Mintmark The reverse designs also incorporate The Perth Mint's historic 'P' mintmark. Australian Legal Tender Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, each coin bears the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on its obverse. Presentation Case Each Set is housed in a blue leatherette presentation case and an illustrated outer shipper depicting all nine historic figures. Numbered Certificate of Authenticity Each Set is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. Limited Mintage Just 2,500 of these Sets will be released.
