The Perth Mint’s original flagpole, erected in 1901, was withdrawn from service 100 years later when it began to show signs of deterioration. Much of the Oregon pine remained beautifully preserved, however, prompting the Mint to recycle it into a limited number of spectacular sovereign settings. Antique ‘Flagpole’ Setting The Flagpole Edition Sovereign Set features a 1901 Perth Mint sovereign and a 2003-dated 1/4oz Australian Nugget proof gold coin. The coins, together with a serial-numbered, gold-plated silver medallion, are set in a slice of the square section of the flagpole. Reverse Masterpiece The gold sovereign features Benedetto Pistrucci’s masterpiece St George and the Dragon reverse design, and includes the Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark. Sir Thomas Brock’s veiled head effigy of Queen Victoria appears on the obverse. The legal tender, 99.99% pure gold Australian Nugget, features two kangaroos and the ‘P’ mintmark. The obverse carries Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Limited Release Just 130 Flagpole Edition Sovereign Sets can ever be issued, offering astute collectors a chance to secure a unique piece of Perth Mint heritage. Detailed Certificate Each Flagpole Edition Sovereign Set, which is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity detailing the history of The Perth Mint’s first flagpole, also benefits from an attractive presentation box.
