Notorious Pirates and Privateers
Black Bart
Born in Wales in 1682, Bartholomew Roberts was the most successful pirate of his era, reputed to have captured more than 400 ships. A flamboyant pirate who wore a diamond-encrusted gold-cross, the seemingly invincible Black Bart was blasted by grapeshot and killed while engaging an English man-o’-war in 1722.
Blackbeard
Born in England around 1680, Edward Teach was the archetypal blood-thirsty pirate. Armed to the hilt with daggers and pistols, he added a devilish air to his appearance by tying smouldering hemp chords in his long black hair. But like most of his contemporaries, Blackbeard met a grizzly end, slashed to pieces at his last stand in 1718.
William Kidd
William Kidd, who was born in Scotland around 1645, was privateer accused of turning to piracy in the Indian Ocean. Originally sponsored by a syndicate of powerful noblemen, Kidd lost favour with them and was branded a criminal. Legends of his treasure hoard refused to die even after Kidd himself was hanged in 1701.
Sir Henry Morgan
Born around 1635, Henry Morgan was a Welsh privateer who organised daring buccaneer raids along the Spanish Main from his base in Jamaica. His actions gained him the reputation of a barbarous pirate who engaged in the use of much cruelty and torture. As a popular hero, however, he was knighted by the King.
Calico Jack
Born in England in 1682, Jack Rackham wore colourful calico clothes, but is best remembered for two women in his crew. When Rackham’s ship was captured, the females fought to the last, while their drunken shipmates surrendered feebly. The men went to the gallows while the feisty females escaped death by claiming to be “with child”.
