The Perth Mint has created an Australian $1 coin for exclusive inclusion in Australia Post’s stamp and coin cover marking the start of Lachlan Macquarie’s historic tenure as Governor of New South Wales 200 years ago in 1810.
Uncirculated Aluminium Bronze
The $1 coin is struck from aluminium bronze in uncirculated quality.
Historical Reverse Design
The coin’s reverse portrays an image of the famous Governor with depictions of a five-shilling holey dollar and a 15 pence dump. Created from a large quantity of Spanish silver dollars acquired by Macquarie in 1812, they represent Australia’s first official coinage.
Australian Legal Tender
Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the $1 coin depicts the Ian Rank-Bradley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the 2010 year-date on the obverse.
Four 55c Commemorative Stamps
The coin is housed on a card portraying Macquarie’s framed portrait which fits inside an envelope featuring four 55c Australia Post stamps. The first stamp depicts Macquarie and a contemporary view of Sydney. The other three stamps, which are entitled VISIONARY, EMANCIPATOR and BUILDER, portray historical images of Port Jackson, the Parramatta Female Penitentiary and the Governor’s Sydney Stables.
Commemorative Postmark
The stamps are cancelled with a special post mark featuring an image of Macquarie’s signature and words:
