For the first time since decimalisation, Britain is changing the designs on its ₤1, 50p, 20p, 10p, 5p, 2p and 1p legal tender coins. To mark this watershed in numismatic history, the Royal Mint has issued a limited edition Brilliant Uncirculated Emblems of Britain Collection featuring the classic designs that have (in most cases) served Britain for more than 35 years.
Brilliant Uncirculated Quality
The seven 2008-dated coins are struck in their base metal alloys to brilliant uncirculated quality.
Classic Reverse Designs
₤1 The Royal Arms with the lion and the unicorn supporters, designed by Eric Sewell.
50p Britannia seated holding a trident in her right hand, a sprig of olive in her left and a lion at her feet, designed by Christopher Ironside.
20p A crowned Tudor rose, designed by William Gardner.
10p A lion passant guardant royally crowned, designed by Christopher Ironside.
5p A thistle royally crowned, designed by Christopher Ironside.
2p The Prince of Wales feathers, designed by Christopher Ironside.
1p A crowned portcullis with chains, designed by Christopher Ironside.
‘Decimal’ Obverse
Arnold Machin’s specially commissioned ‘decimal’ portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverse of each coin.
Limited Availability
No more than 100,000 Brilliant Uncirculated Collections will ever be produced.
Presentation Folder
The Brilliant Uncirculated Collection comes in a fully illustrated and informative presentation folder, which tells the story of decimalisation in Britain.
