BMX Riding is a type of off-road bicycle racing derived from motocross racing. BMX bicycle races are sprint races on purpose-built, off-road, single-lap race tracks. The track usually consists of a starting gate for up to eight racers and a dirt race course made of various jumps and rollers and a finish line.
In Australia, the sport is very family-orientated, with riders varying in ages from children to adults. For those with great bike skills, professional ranks exist for both males and females with many riders going on to other forms of bike racing. BMX racing requires strength, speed and bike-handling flair, and allows for both team and individual participation.
There are many different types of BMX jumps and stunts, ranging from small rollers to massive step-up doubles – all dependent on the speed and skill of the rider.
